Jail house
After years of only having one jail house they had to build a
bigger one. The original prison housed
11 inmates, the new one houses 33 inmates.
This prison no only serves Reykjavík, it serves the whole
country. As you can see, this is a very safe country, as most to the crimes are
petty incidents.
Heating
Iceland's houses have radiators that are pumped with boiling
hot water that comes directly from the ground, obviously, all the heating is
free.
The streets are also heated by the hot water, so during the
cold months of winter there is never snow or ice on the roads. However, as I
mentioned on a prior blog, we were there during the summer and it was freezing.
Food
One of the famous foods of Iceland are the hotdogs, and the
most famous place to eat them is Bæjarins Beztu Hot
Dog Stand, which is located on the corner of Tryggvagata and Pósthússtræti. If
you ask anybody about the hotdog stand, they will tell you where it is as
everybody know it. The hot dogs are made of lamb and they are delicious, however,
you need to order at least two, because one is not enough.
Lamb soup is very typical and a lot of fish, however, I am
allergic to fish.
Iceland is expensive. We bought food at the supermarket a few
times and cooked at the hostel, and this is something I don’t usually do,
however, that proved to be expensive too.
World cup
This is the first year, after many tries, that Iceland made
it into the world cup. There were big screens all over town showing the matches
and all the bars had TV’s showing them too. Even that they lost, they were
happy and proud to have made it to the cup. It was nice to see them all
cheering and being happy to participate.
The country is beautiful, and even that it is expensive, it
is well worth it.
I would not mind coming back one day.
